Kearney, Ph.D.

The diagnosis takes a view of inclusion or exclusion from a community. There is an examination of 5 psychopathology models and Kearney settles on biological-cognitive-behavioral model with a basis on sociocultural adaptation. He calls this the diathesis-stress model. A diathesis is a term for a pre-existing condition.

There are two theories in determining if treatment is appropriate. One is the comparison of an evaluation to a stress model when examining results. The other is the concept that a condition must be present for 6 months in order to receive treatment. This should not be confused with evaluations, care, or counseling.

Counseling takes a different form than that of a professional counselor and is more of a consultation on harmful expression, levels of distress, and reoccurence.

The book has a pattern whithin each area of treatment. There are definitions that are useful for new health workers. They can also help experienced health workers form a common language in the workplace. Diathesis is a theme throughout the book and stigma for each sections disorders are part of the study pattern. Each section also includes at least one case study. There are examples on how to collect and track data. Very similar to a medical chart. A section summary and review questions help with establishing a schedule on further reading or research.

The stress model has a basis on epidemiology. There is a comparison of the examinee to the overall behaviors for a geography or the gene group. This can lead to better assessments and there are also sections on prevention treatment and care.

One of the current themes in psychopathology or mental health in general is the biological models. The fMRI is discussed, an overview of the MRI is given, and the risks of CAT and PET scans are reviewed. There is also information on other neuroimaging devices that can be compared to the biological models included in the book. Statistics are presented in an easy to understand format and depression provides additional samples of neuroimaging.

Data is provided that can be verified with other medical sources. However the theories are unique in that they present a specific context of medical treatment for mental disorders. There is also a specific symptoms period that must be met and there is a focus on distress of the examinee. The resource can be used as an introduction or reference to diagnosing and treating mental disorders. Most patients will already be familiar with humanism from work or college.

This helps to form a common language during treatment.
